Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken along the backroads of northwestern North Dakota in Williams County.

Time

It was late winter and just after noon on a typical, cloudy, wintery day in Northwestern North Dakota

Lighting

Nothing special, it was a grey, dreary day. The pheasant busted out along a creek bank near a road and the photograph was taken as it flew across the road.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with a 70-200mm F2.8 L lens set at 155 mm, 320 ISO and a shutter speed of 1/2500 sec

Inspiration

It was a wildlife, action shot. I was at the right place at the right time. I didn't shoot the scene for anyone specifically, but it was shot for every one who wanted to see a pheasant busting out from its hiding spot.

Editing

Standard Lightroom processing, keeping it simple.

In my camera bag

Actually my bag is a mess. I see all these videos and hear others talk about how organized their respective bags are and I think that's awesome- I should buy that kind of bag!!! But I don't and mine is still a mess. Anyway, I throw my 7D with a 70 - 200 / 2.8 lens in my truck and I am off (my tripod is typically in the truck). In my bag I carry a second 7D body and a Tamron SP 24-70 2.8, a Canon 100mm macro, a Canon EXII 430 speedlight, a Phottix Stratto II trigger and receiver, lens cleaning supplies, LensCoat rain protection, extra batteries and compact flash cards, flash light, and a small mirror and various cables.

Feedback

Be prepared and keep it simple. For me, shooting wildlife is about knowing what you want to shoot and being prepared to shoot the photo when the opportunity arises. I might drive miles a day or sit for hours waiting, but when an animal that I want to shoot shows itself I am ready to go. Sometimes, I see them at the most unlikely or inconvenient times. I slam on my brakes, I stop traffic and I act like a tourist in their world. On other occasions, I am able to sneak in take a photograph and they never know I am there (until I trip on a log, fall on my face and let the whole forest know I am there, but only AFTER I have gotten the photo I was there to get in the first place of course)
