I took this picture looking due west for the sunset while on Key West on vacation. If you've ever been there, or other destinations like it, typically there are sunset cruises going on with several types of boats. This one made it's timing nearly perfect for me to shoot it with the sun between the sails.Time
This was just about 15 minutes prior to sunset, so very much in the "golden hour" as you can tell.Lighting
To get the desired effect I was again shooting in manual mode, exposing for the light to make the shadows and the boat go dark, and kept a fairly small aperture to get quite a bit of the scene in focus.Equipment
Nikon D3S, 70-200 f/2.8 at f/9, hand held with the shutter at 1/640th, ISO320. If this were taken later then I would have gone to my tripod to control any handheld motion blur.Inspiration
I love sunset pictures, and I planned to get one that looked directly over the ocean with boats in the shot, I just didn't know how nice the boat was going to be until I saw this one.Editing
Yes, PS LR to bring back the color, since a RAW file can lose details like that, so I reviewed the JPG ( I shoot RAW+JPG) to see what it sawIn my camera bag
When shooting landscapes I will typically have my Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 with me, depending upon the type of landscape or sunset, and the scenery around it that I want to include. My camera body has changed over the years, where with this picture I used the D3S, lately I'm using my D5 (replaced the D3S with it) or the Z7 for larger files to print. My tripod is always near, and my variable ND filter and Circular polarizer too. Slow exposures require my remote shutter release.Feedback
Plan your time of day and location well in advance, and plan to arrive very early, because you may find shots you'll want while setting up for the sunset picture you planned out. Lastly, don't be afraid to look behind you, I've taken shots of the sunset lighting up hills, trees, etc that ended up looking much better than the sunset!
