Location
I took this photograph in nothing more than a canal bank with some grass & a single oak tree, among a parking lot that is not visible and out of frame. A town called Melbourne, Florida; where areas behind apartment buildings can also be photogenically beautiful. lolTime
Taken when I was still in the beginning stages of practicing my photo editing skills, I was always aiming for doing shoots around sunset. So this photograph would have been between 6PM - 8PM (depending on Daylight savings time). When editing these Canon camera colors, sunset light gives me the most splendid editing opportunity.Lighting
I wanted this concept to show magic and sparks flying out of the jar she was holding. So I took a few shots holding the lights in the jar upward, giving the appearance of them bursting outward. I had to make sure the lighting was focused on and more present on her face and the direction she was facing. After editing in the sparks and adjustments, it was blended nicely by the fact that the light emitting from the jar was carrying over onto the subject.Equipment
Canon 5D Mark 3 - Sigma Art 50mm Lens That's it BABY!!Inspiration
I've always been inspired by conceptual photography and enjoyed following the works of masters like Joel Robison and Rosie Hardy for years. My wife, Lauren Laveria (also depicted in the image), has been pushing me to create more concepts of my own, and this was one of the very first from all those years ago together. This image was my display of the wonder and excitement that comes from editing and creating conceptual photography pieces. Finding that magical item you've been seeking and experiencing the moment it reaches out to you.Editing
This shot required some Photoshop edits to make the lights in the jar stand up, as well as overlaying the sparks and lighting adjustments. Any final curves or color editing is honed in via Lightroom. In my camera bag
My bag is light, tight, and versatile. I am proud to say even on wedding day (wedding photographer here, hello) my bag only consists of my camera, a 35mm attached to it, a 50mm on standby, a wall plug battery charger, some crystals/prisms, an LED light panel, some extra CF cards. There are no stands, off camera flash setups, strobes, deflectors, anything external. Just my hands and the camera body :)Feedback
Always push yourself to create new ideas that make you think of more challenging ways to edit an image. Allow yourself to think up or conjure an idea that might seem "hard to edit" at first. You will almost always find a way that leads to learning something useful for the next image. Defy gravity, make yourself float, figure out cool and new ways to manipulate your image so that it tells the story the way you see it in the world.
