Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in San Diego, California. In a studio setup indoors.

Time

It was taken in the late morning, after the model was styled for hair and make up. Because it was shot indoors the time of day wasn’t essential.

Lighting

I wanted the lighting to have more of a moody look to it. I loved the idea of edge lighting the hair to get the volume and shape of it to show up. The lighting was to show the outline of the form.

Equipment

I used my workhorse Canon 6D with my 24-70L series lens. I used two strobe lights with umbrellas position behind the model.

Inspiration

I worked with the hairstylist who needed the image made for a hairstyle contest. The theme was to use curls in the hair. We looked up a vairety of images of what kind of pose, lighting and expression we wanted. Originally we wanted it in B&W but I wanted to incorporate some fun colors with the moving Holi powder around the model.

Editing

Due to breathing difficulties from prior experiences with Holi powder, we decided to shoot the model and the powder in separate shots. I then added in the Holi powder photos in photoshop after.

In my camera bag

My Canon 6D, 24-70L, a 50 1.4, a speedlight, filters for lenses, extra batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

Make sure you have good brooms and an area to clean up all of the powder. It will cover everything and get in your gear. Keep all your photography gear far away from the powder in the air. Shooting at a 3/4 to 1/2 length helps so you don’t see the floor with all of the powder. Using blending modes on your layer in photoshop helps to see it show up on another layer. Once you have one color shot you can change the hue in photoshop later. Only need to shoot one color.
