Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo inside Sagrada Família, on a short (too short!) trip to Barcelona.

Time

This was taken mid-morning. Gaudí's basilica gets so crowded it's best to book one's tickets in advance, so that's just what we did. This was the start of our second day in Barcelona, and we spent hours inside this incredible building.

Lighting

The light on this morning was bright and clear. The basilica was beautifully lit by the natural light, streaming in from both stained-glass and clear windows, illuminating the magnificent cream and white interior.

Equipment

This was shot hand-held, on a Nikon d90 with the regular kit lens.

Inspiration

Everything about the Sagrada Família is breathtaking, but I became especially enraptured with the ceiling. It's so simple yet so complex. The columns throughout rise up like tree trunks, spreading high into the canopy-like ceiling. I spent most of my time here walking around with my eyes pointed directly up, mouth wide open in awe.

Editing

I always do a bit of post-processing on my photos. I took this before I began using Lightroom, so I simply brought it into Photoshop and applied a pre-set action I was using at the time. No cropping was done to this photo.

In my camera bag

While I took this photo with a Nikon d90, I've since moved onto Canon. I always have my Canon 6d, my Sigma 24mm 1.4, and my new Sigma 40mm 2.8 (hoping to invest in a 24-70mm sometime in the future.) I always have charged back-up batteries and the charger with me, lens hoods, and a gorillapod.

Feedback

The Sagrada Família is a little overwhelming in it's beauty. My advice for taking a similar picture, no matter where you are, is to really spend some time in the place. Walk around, soak it all in, try to find the hidden angles and details that perhaps others aren't paying attention to. Above all, just shoot as much as possible!
