Location
This was taken at Thousand Island Lake in the backcountry of the Ansel Adams Wilderness. This was our first backpacking experience. We were ambitious & traveled 21 miles in 2 days. Go big or go home!Time
Having never slept in the backcountry in a tent, we were all early to rise after almost no sleep. I had my alarm set just in case to catch the sunrise. So glad this 5:00 a.m. view did not disappoint. Nothing beats the first light hitting Banner Peak!Lighting
Nature provided all the lighting needed to make this one of my favorite pictures of all time. This is where I learned about Alpenglow.Equipment
This was shot with my older camera, a Sony A200, 18-70mm lens. No other equipment was required.Inspiration
After seeing pictures of Thousand Island Lake & Banner Peak online, I was determined to witness this sight in person. My husband, our 11 year old son & myself bought all the necessary gear to hike into this beautiful land & capture this moment.Editing
I was just starting out with photography & had not yet learned about shooting in RAW. This picture is a simple JPEG image slightly adjusted in Photos on our iMac. This beautiful image stands on its own, not needing so much post processing is testament to the natural beauty out there. In my camera bag
Now that I started my own business, I broke down & bought a new Sony A7II with a 18-70 mm lens. I was able to keep my old 75-300 mm lens with an adapter to work with the new camera. I am now fascinated with Astrophotography. So after reading reviews, I purchased the Rokinon 1.4/24 mm lens to capture the night sky. Along with a neutral density filter, circular polarizing filter & remote camera cable release, I also carry 4 batteries, 2 32GB memory cards, tripod & the Voltaic Fuse 9W Solar Tablet. After hiking so far, it would be a bummer to have dead batteries!Feedback
As all photographers know, there is no guaranty that you'll get the perfect shot. My best advice would be to always be prepared. You never know when that moment will happen. Even backpacking, I carry my camera in my hand. This at times is cumbersome, but so worth it when an opportunity pops up in front of you (like a bear on the trail!). Patience is always key, but don't make getting that perfect shot your sole mission. Otherwise you'll miss out on all the beauty around you. Always enjoy the moment!
