Location
I shot this photo while I was in a small ferry sailing from Lapulapu City to Cebu City in the Philippines. There are actually two bridges connecting the two cities, but to me taking the ferry affords nicer sights.Time
This was at sundown, just before city lights would come on. Thankfully, I still got a sharp image in such low light and in a moving vessel at that.Lighting
This was all in available light and the image was a straightforward shot.Equipment
This is one of my oldest digital photos. I only used an early Panasonic point-and-shoot that allowed me to set a minimum shutter speed in auto ISO. To counteract the considerable vibration from the ferryboat's engine, I only tucked my arms against my sides.Inspiration
I simply admired the sunset, even if the view was not of a nature scene.Editing
The original capture did not have such saturated colors. I used the in-camera "Creative Retouch" feature at "Expressive" setting and saved the result as a new image in the card. Afterwards, I adjusted clarity in post to bring out detail in the clouds and in the water and reduced noise. In my camera bag
I still frequently use my old Canon EOS 550D and 50mm f1.8 STM. This old camera still gives very good images but only when focusing via live view, which is agonizingly slow. I have a Panasonic Lumix GX8 and a variety of Lumix zooms and good Sigma and third-party primes. I use these for both stills and 4K video. Also in my bag is a Fuji X-E3, which gives superb stills as well as 4K video. On photoshoots I usually bring them all together (with a limited lens selection) to avoid having to change lenses so often. For walkaround though, I only bring the Fuji X-E3 with 23mm f2.0.Feedback
Currently available photography software choices will enable any enthusiast now to produce beautiful and interesting images, even working with photos taken with older cameras and smartphones. The key is in knowing what is judicious and tasteful editing. This can be learned by examining the outstanding works that others have created that have earned well-deserved acclaim and praise.
