Behind The Lens

Location

At the 2015 Joint Base Andrews Airshow.

Time

This was 11:30 am. I arrived at 9:30 wandered around for a little while and the staked out the area I wanted to shoot from. It is very important to arrive early at an airshow. You need to place yourself at the fence in front of everyone else and void the center section unless you want to see the ceremonies and close displays. The crowds are more sparse near the edges.

Lighting

Shoot as much as you can the sun will glint off cowlings at just the right angle look for when that happens and try to shoot as it is happening. I know some photographers will shoot bursts.

Equipment

Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 80-400 for the aerials and a Nikkor 105mmMicro and a 12-16mm for close-ups and crowds. I do not use a tripod and probably would not even if I was using a 600mm.

Inspiration

I love things that fly.

Editing

Not much, some saturation and sharpening in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light so I will normally have either my Nikkor 105Micro or my Nikkor 80-400. The one not being used in in a padded bag on my shoulder with a Nikon SB26 strobe attached. If I feel like I will be using my wide angle a lot I will have it and macro attachments in my Dome vest.

Feedback

Practice with cars and birds before you try to shoot fast airplanes.
