I made a couple of prints 37 years ago, when i was 18 years old. The camera i used was a Pentax k1000 slr, and I really took 1000's of images but not all of them got processed (i did processing myself). This was a dilapidated old little building right behind our house where i grew up in Ladismith, Cape Province South Africa..

this photo was taken 37 years ago in my hometown Ladismith, Cape Province, South Africa. It was a very old, tiny, dilapidated building with broken windows and shutters with a permanently open door. The young girls i found there peeping around, same way as i do, and i asked them to carry on, not to be bothered about me. I was first BA at Stellenbosch and wanted so badly to do photography, but due to the fact that i didn't do Arts but social studies, i was sneaked into the dept to attend the photography with the Honn Jewellery Design students, and to be hush hush about it, and to be sure that i will not get any credit for it, which was fine. Wanted to do Photo Journalism in my final year any way, so it didn't bother me - which never happened. Life and all its surprises happened, which i will never exchange for any dreams. That is what dreams are made of..... so i picked up photography and viewbug 2 months ago, and viola!! never in my wildest dreams did i expect to be a winner at all.. thank you for the opportunity to share an 37 year old photograph of mine with viewbug. BUT you put the fire under me again. thank you for that.Time
11 o'clock in the morning, overcast winter day....Lighting
overcast day , that's about all i can remember...Equipment
pentax k1000 slr, no tripod, 50mm standard lens and my own opportunism... lovely, that's all you need...Inspiration
the old building had an ambience and the windows looked dirty and full of dust and inside was a torn old coach with the springs popping out, and i thought these girls and the building could bring something worthwhile for my project, which was windows and doors....Editing
Yes, we had to develop the film and process the print ourselves.. great fun. Today, with its ease and comfort, it's too much work and effort. I don't think i can do it anymore....i remember we had to build a box camera as part of the exhibition which we held and we could paint the box any color and with any medium we wanted. We took a copper plate and drilled a tiny little hole in the middle of it, and positioned it somewhere in the front, and had to pose for every photograph taken for about 5 min. Any movement in front while exposing, didn't show at all, due to the time taken!!In my camera bag
Normally i have a nikon d5000, d300 for uv photography exclusively and purchase a nikon d810 recently, waiting for its delivery. Can't wait, want to try those beautiful landscapes with slow exposures, as i see so many good photographers are taking and exhibiting on viewbug! They are a great inspiration for me.Feedback
See the light AND shadow, and expose, AND always try to give it more exposure if you must or less exposure post, and only if your image needs it. Light is lovely but in comparison with shadow...with all the tonal values in between. I just an amateur but willing to learn every time. Don't be afraid to be wrong!! That's all advice i can give any one, explore and make mistakes and throw away which you don't need and exposed again, it takes nothing to do anything over again, not like when you have a slr.
