Behind The Lens

Location

I spent the day visiting The Warrior at the historic dockyard, Portsmouth, England -The Warrior itself is a magnificent boat and this picture was one of my favourites from the day.

Time

I took this late afternoon, we'd spent a good couple of hours covering the whole boat when I discovered these magnificent steering wheels - the sun was dipping and just catching off the brasses. Also the crowds were dispersing so it had become much quieter - a small amount of cloud though had begun to form.

Lighting

I felt that due to the subject I wanted a nostalgic feel to the finished photograph - the photo was taken late afternoon so made the process easier - softer light due to an almost golden hour feel.

Equipment

I used a Samsung NX2000, with a 20-50MM lens, hand held as most of my shots are, I very rarely use tripod or flash as I prefer natural light and creative or expressive shots. I will occasionally use filters but not in this instance.

Inspiration

I have always loved history and castles, houses, ruins or ships I will find something to photograph - one of my mottos i constantly tell my daughters is that these are the memories of our trips. I will always have a camera with me even if it's just a mobile phone camera, on this occasion I found certain areas of the ship that intrigued me, this was one of them. When framing the shot I looked at various angles, constantly checking the images that I had already taken. Even though the ship was busy I ended up on my knees to get at the level I felt would be more aesthetically pleasing, moving around the wheels until I found the best angle. The light was perfect, although I took 5 or 6 different photos this was the one I was happiest with.

Editing

I used Lightroom to process the RAW image. As previously mentioned I felt that the photo would look better with a more nostalgic look/effect - so I used a lightroom bnw preset but then changed the levels until happy with the exposure, contrast etc. Adding a slight dehaze, and small amount of sepia until finally happy.

In my camera bag

I alway used to have my Samsung NX2000, my favourite lens at the time was a 20-50MM. Now though I use a Nikon D7100, normally I pretty much stick to a 18-105mm, but I also carry a 35mm, 55-300mm, various SD cards - I do have a flashgun for when I need to use one but it doesn't often leave my bag (oops) I tend to shoot photos that don't require a flash. I also have a few ND filters not too expensive, CPL and a UV filter for if I feel like using them - and always spare batteries. My latest buy a Norwex optic cloth great little cloth - brilliant for quick cleans on the go and great value.

Feedback

Busy crowds can sometimes be a problem I find, and you can get some odd looks when kneeling or even lying on the floor to get the shot you want. I find that waiting for a quiet lull works best, having my camera on contiuous burst so I get a good 4-6 shots at a time and can then pick from the best one. Sometimes if possible I will go back to something I've seen before and wait or pre-plan to go on a different day, BUT most of all having patience - we're all there to look at the beautiful and fantastic sites/views. Most of all enjoy yourself and take photographs of things that you enjoy and that make you happy - that's what I do and it works best for me - enjoy yourselves everyone because from where I'm looking looks like your having a blast.
