Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Battle Castle, East Sussex, England in one of the arched rooms. Built by William 1 after the 1066 Battle of Hastings.

Time

Taken 1410 26/10/11

Lighting

The light was ambient 'indoor' daylight from opening with bright light coming in from the arched windows.

Equipment

Taken with Nikon D3100, 18-55 kit lens at 18mm, 1/25sec, f4.5, ISO 800, A priority.

Inspiration

Subject sat in the background is my wife who was lost in thought captivated by the surround and history. She had no idea I was taking this. I was inspired by the setting, peace, light and the lonely figure contemplating in the large expanse under he medieval arches.

Editing

Post-processed to Black and White in Lightroom made it more in keeping with the mood of the image. Some light dodge & burn. I tend to "think black and white" unless the colours really speak

In my camera bag

The Nikon was a fairly new acquisition at the time. I have since converted to mirrorless as my Nikon kit and lenses were becoming bag-bound due to bulk and weight. Great kit but.... I now have Olympus OMD EM10 and Olympus Pen F with Olympus 14-42mm pancake, 40-150mm and a Sigma 60mm. One or other of the bodies ( or both ) go most places with me plus the 14-42mm - just so carry-able.

Feedback

Look for shapes and contrast (in this case apart from lighting contrast, the contrast of old and new(er person)). Also look for the candid take; this wouldn't have worked posed methinks.
