Behind The Lens

Location

Yea is a country town around 100km from Melbourne and the wetlands have been extensively developed with walking tracks and viewing platforms to where required to facilitate access and to protect the surroundings.

Time

Taken early afternoon, I had intended to photograph a tall tree that was located in a relatively open area and was carefully picking my way through the flooded ground when I lightly brushed the web of this spider. I looked up and spotted the spider sitting patiently, I guess waiting for a more manageable meal to arrive and immediately forgot about the tree.

Lighting

The lighting was determined largely by where I could stand and the height of the spider above my head. I would have needed a ladder and waterproof boots to get a top down view but would then have missed out on the rim lighting that shooting toward the sky provided. Either way, I was happy.

Equipment

Hand held EOS6D with a 24-105 lens, I wasn't expecting this opportunity.

Inspiration

I had photographed spiders before, but this was a rare opportunity in that the spider was large, stationary and the lighting was good, so I was happy with the results.

Editing

I try to keep post processing simple and use On1 software and NIK to sharpen and remove or reduce any noise.

In my camera bag

If setting out on a planned shoot, I would normally carry 3 lenses, a 16-35, 24-105 and a 70-200 plus spare camera batteries and a polariser, I might also add a 1.4 and a 2.O extender but try to travel as light as possible.

Feedback

The only advice I can give is to look up and look for the light.
