Behind The Lens

Location

I'm a photographer from South Africa, and from the city of Pretoria nicknamed the Jacaranda City. It is estimated that there are between 40 which choreograph their spectacular show over an eight week period in late spring each year.

Time

There are many beautiful streets lined with Jacaranda trees, and I generally drive around, and scout for what I believe will do justice to the image. This was taken early morning at around 06:00. This street is some 15 minutes drive from my home, so I left at around 05:00 to be in time for the setup.

Lighting

From my exploration or the area, I knew that sunrise will be from that side, and I was delightedly surprised with early morning mist that enhanced the early morning feel of freshness and anticipation. The 2 runners was bonus.....

Equipment

I'm a Nikonian, and this was shot on the Nikon D850 on tripod, with the Nikor 24-70 f2.8

Inspiration

As previously mentioned Pretoria is aptly need the Jacaranda city, and you will find many excellent images of Jacarandas in bloom. The challenge was to (1) locate street that was not shot recently, (2) not to busy, and (3) would provide me with the opportunity to explore options, and to fulfil my vision of the image

Editing

I do most (some 90%) of my postprocessing in Lightroom, and in general find it not necessary to transfer it to another program for refinement. The challenge is to get it "right" in camera, and then enhance the areas of shadows and light, using dodging, burning, and radial filters. I think I shot some 4-5 images of the same scene before the light changed, and did no bracketing.

In my camera bag

I really do like street photography, and when I wander into the streets it is the Nikon Z6 with a 35mm f1.8, and just for good measure the 50mm f1.8. I do most of the "zooming" with my feet, working and exploring the best possible light and position. When out on the streets I rarely take the 70-200 f2.8, although it is one of my favourite lens. What I found that by limiting myself to the prime lenses, it does not restrict, but actually make me more creative.

Feedback

Plan, plan, plan. I used to go out and shoot, and come back with a lot of images. But nowadays I plan and are very deliberate about what I want. So when I come back I have maybe between 20- 30 images which I can relate back to my planning
