Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the glistening waters of Lake Louise in Banff, Canada.

Time

After an exhilarating hike on a trail along the mountains, we decided to give our legs a rest and canoe to get a more intimate connection with their famous emerald waters and the tall snow capped mountains. This was later in the afternoon and the weather had become more cooling.

Lighting

Since this photo wasn't taken at the peak of the sunniness that day, the sun didn't make the photo too bright. This allowed a contrast in the photo and made everything look much clearer. The further mountains were capped with snow so it created a white light when it hit the sun. When the splitting of two mountains has a bright light in between it because it kind of reminds me of a movie when people open a door and a bright light is released.

Equipment

Since the scenery was already so beautiful, I wanted the capture of it to be simple. The lighting had already produced a high resolution photo and there was natural contrast. So, the Canon Powershot ELPH 330 HS was what I used. I usually use my Nikon D3200 but sometimes it's better to not overcomplicate taking a picture when you already have something perfect laid out in front of you.

Inspiration

I've always seen photos of the tip of a canoe in the water on the internet. I wanted to take a photo like that on my trip to Banff but when I was canoeing, I realized that there were two mountains that were creating a perfect opening. I haven't come a across a photo of a tip of a canoe with a symmetrical background. I thought that it would be unique to add something extra to that typical photo and it turns out that this quick photo got published on a magazines, newspapers, and won prizes!

Editing

As I mentioned earlier, the lighting was already perfect. The only things I did was add more definition to it and a bit more contrast just to enhance it. I want to keep it natural and make it look like how I saw it with my eyes.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon Powershot ELPH 330 HS with me because it's always easy to use and effective. When I want to take a photo with natural shadows and contrast, I use that because it doesn't adjust anything. If i'm taking macro pictures or portraits, I like to use my Nikon D3200. It has very high resolution and includes every detail. If i'm doing a photo shoot, I always remember to bring two memory cards if one of them has a problem.

Feedback

I think that when you come across a scenery with symmetry, make that the focus of your picture. Place your camera in the middle of the line of symmetry. This adds a bit of architectural element to the photo, something you don't often see in nature photography.
