This photo was taken from Indian Beach in Trinidad, Ca...it is one of the most beautiful places i have ever been, everywhere i look in this town is inspiring land and oceanscapes.Time
I took this on a cloudy afternoon that really did not seem that perfect for a good photo.Lighting
I shoot outdoors, but lighting is still important, i had to be careful not to blow out the whites on such a cloudy day but still needed enough light to catch details. What i saw with my eyes was not capable of being captured by my camera but i knew i could achieve what I saw with post processing.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 60D for this photo, i took the photo freehand, no tripod, i think had i used a tripod it may have been much better, but at the time i was trying to capture some white sea lions on a rock that i saw as i was driving by so it was a last minute decision to hike down to the beach. I did not have my tripod with me, lesson learned, always be prepared lol.Inspiration
I was inspired by some white sea lions basking nearby and once i started shooting I couldn't stop. I ended up spending hours there and captured many great photos.Editing
I like to experiment with technology and I see so much more than the camera can capture. I love using photoshop and lightroom to enhance photos and try to capture what i see with my eyes. I used the HDR filter from photoshop on this shot, at first i used the surreal preset then i adjusted everything from there. The surreal filter tends to go too far in blowing out the whites so i used the curve tool to adjust the whites and i pushed the clarity as high as i could get without pushing the whites up too far, its a delicate balance but when you get it right it can make for a fascinating photo. In my camera bag
I have switched to Nikon Dx because i like shooting with a full frame sensor, I do a lot of video work so i usually bring a drone, and a go pro so i can also shoot in the sky and underwater. Im a low budget photographer so I like to rent the exact lens i plan on using, i definitely use polarising filters as i shoot a lot on cloudy days and in low light conditions.Feedback
My advice is to be experimental, bracket your shots so you try different exposures, shoot everything, try lots of different perspectives and fill up that memory card! Every moment is unique so capturing as much as you can will make editing easier. I love post processing and for all the 20+years ive been using adobe products i still havent unlocked half of what is possible. My last piece of advice is i think the most important: realise that you are unique and you have your own way of looking at the world so dont be intimidated by the work of other photographers regardless of your technical experience. Photography is a journey of discovery and altho we enter our photos in contests, there really is no contest. Art is subjective and really can not be judged or compared. Every photographic contribution is a moment in time that can never be recaptured, so cherish your work and do not judge yourself harshly. Sometimes the pictures we are the least proud of hold great value for others.
