Behind The Lens

Location

Foys Lake in Kalispell Montana

Time

Early afternoon, around 1pm Montana in the winter the sun is already down by 4:30-5pm

Lighting

it was an overcast day which created some really beautiful soft light.

Equipment

5D Canon DSLR, 50mm lens on a tripod. I have an ioShutterPro cable that attaches to my camera and my iPhone that sync's with an app on my phone that I can control the shutter with ( lapse, timer, sound, bulb)

Inspiration

it was my first winter moving back to Montana. I knew I wanted to go up to Foys Lake to take pictures of the new snow fall from the night before, the snow was up to the shins! I had in mind from the very beginning that I was going to make the pictures black and white. I knew I was also going to take some self portraits, I usually do when I go out on photo adventures solo, I also like to show a size reference in a lot of nature pictures and myself is always on hand.

Editing

Yes, I made it black in white in photo shop, I have a handful of actions that I use, a vignette, grain and scratches to give it texture.

In my camera bag

5d Canon, 50mm fix, 35-80mm, waterproof memory case with 4 CF cards plus a few more, extra batteries, ioShutterPro cable for time lapses, tripod, landscape Polaroid camera w/flim, 580ex Speedlight

Feedback

An over cast day is key, it creates a big soft box and it doesn't matter where the sun is, you wont have to worry about any harsh shadows or angles. I knew I wanted to make these black in white, I wore a black coat so there was contrast against the snow making me stand out from the back ground. I am also positioned higher up on a ledge, the snow blends the levels together but the lake and trees are actually down below in the distance. I also used a higher ISO so I could use a higher f-stop to have the background sharp and also it helps with my chances of being in focus as well. You can't be in a rush when you do self portraits, there's a lot of checking in the camera to see placement, poses, exposure etc. I love doing self portraits, there's no rules and time is on your side to have fun and experiment!
