I took this photograph at Epcot's International Flower and Garden Festival in March of 2014. During this festival, Epcot is covered with amazing flowers everywhere you turn and they have a lovely butterfly tent that you are able to walk through. I am an amateur photographer who loves to get out exploring with my camera whenever I can.Time
When I was walking through one of the garden sections at Epcot, I was captured immediately by the beautiful orange-red of the butterfly and how it matched perfectly with the lovely flower colors. It was almost like they were both just one item because the colors matches so perfectly. This photo was snapped in the mid-afternoon on March 15, 2014.Lighting
I really wanted to try to capture the brilliant reds and oranges in both the flower and butterfly and so kept trying different angles and positions to see if I could catch the lighting to really make the colors pop. I remember trying so hard to move around to find the right lighting without disturbing the butterfly. I settled on crouching down on one knee to try to get a shot straight on of both the flower and butterfly.Equipment
This was shot by hand with a Nikon D7000 using my Nikkor 70-300mm lens. I did not use a flash or any filters.Inspiration
Disney World property is one of my "happy places" where I just love to wander with my camera for hours. Every time I go, I manage to find some new detail or view that I have not seen on previous trips. It might be a stunning piece of woodcarving at the top of one of the buildings around the World Showcase at Epcot or even just the afternoon light hitting the side of the castle at the Magic Kingdom. Each time, I am always amazed at the amount of detail Disney has gone to in things that so many people completely miss in their hustle and bustle of moving through the parks. At Epcot that day, when I rounded the corner of one garden area, I instantly spotted the beautiful orange-red flowers and then I remember drawing my breath in when I saw the perfectly matched butterfly on top of one. I was thrilled that the butterfly decided to honor me with having its picture taken before it flew off.Editing
I do not own Photoshop but I do have Lightroom. I did crop the photo a bit and increase the clarity and vibrance just a small amount. In my camera bag
Whenever I am going on a photo adventure, I grab my D7000 along with my Nikkor 70-300mm and my Tokina 11-16mm lens. My favorite lens to date is my Tokina. I love taking landscape shots and the quality of the Tokina lens has made me happy every time I have used it. If I am going on an adventure a good distance from home, I will take my large photography backpack that carries my camera body, my 70-300mm, 11-16mm, 18-55mm and my Lee Lens adapter ring for my Tokina with a variety of Neutral Density Graduated Filters. For night sky or rocket launch streak shots, I carry my Promaster Wireless Infrared Remote for Nikon.Feedback
When I go out to shoot flowers or butterflies, I try to go out early in the morning or later in the afternoon to try to get the best lighting possible. I look for colors and composition and what works together to make the colors pop or allow a butterfly or dragonfly to pop. Don't hesitate to move around and find a position that helps you capture the best angle and lighting. I find that getting down low allows for an interesting angle and lets you get details on a butterfly that you might now normally capture if you are shooting from a standing position.
