Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot in my own front yard. I had bought a new camera lens and was experimenting with different angles and settings.

Time

I remember coming home from working, pulling up in front of my house and the flower bed had exploded during the day. The light was horrible that time of day, the mosquitoes were insane and the flowers were so heavy with blooms they were laying on the ground. But I was so excited, as this had been the first year for this flower bed, I rushed in the house, grabbed my camera and my daughter and we went to lay in the grass for an hour and play with different flowers and different shots. My daughter was a great sport, as she was the "post" to hold the flowers in place.

Lighting

Because the lighting was so bad, just due to my house location and the early evening light, we positioned these flowers in a way that would highlight the centers and black out all around them, including the stems and surrounding area.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D3200, 18-55mm lens. No tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I am a self taught photographer and had been experimenting the summer with macro and close zoom landscape photography. I also enjoy gardening and beautiful flowers. This flower bed had been a project of mine since the spring and seeing it come into bloom was the only inspiration I required.

Editing

Because of the location of the flower and the poor light, there was definitely some post-processing. Mainly the blackening of the surrounding background. Photoshoot works great for this!

In my camera bag

I am a relatively new photographer, been learning a lot over the past 3 years. I love my Nikon D3200. Started out with the package lens 18-55mm and added on the 55-200mm 2 years ago. These were my only pieces for a long time. This year I have added some filters for those more creative shots, and a 70-300mm prime zoom lens. Love this lens. I also finally added a tripod, however, I am so used to not using it, I pack it long but very rarely use it.
