Vicksburg National Cemetery holds the remains of soldiers who died in the defense of the USA. Vicksburg has 17,000 Civil War Union soldiers, a number unmatched by any other national cemetery. It's interesting to note that very few confederate soldiers are buried in National Cemeteries because National Cemeteries are for soldiers who died defending the USA. Confederate soldiers died fighting against the USA. I hadn't really thought about that before but it makes sense. There are Confederate Cemeteries to honor those soldiers.
Following the Civil War, the U.S. Army located and exhumed the remains of 300,000 Union soldiers buried in the South, re-interring the remains in national cemeteries throughout the country.
