Behind The Lens

Location

While my husband, son, and I were taking our first family vacation, we routed through Yellowstone National Park on our way home. This is a beautiful geyser that popped up through the trees at us and begged to have its picture taken!

Time

This was early afternoon.

Lighting

Unfortunately it was a cloudy day, which I dislike for almost any photo, as I'm a bright kind of person. However, the mist rising from the geyser combined with the grey of the sky was a great backdrop to bring out the bright orange of the mineral deposits on the rocks.

Equipment

This was taken with my Nikon D3200, on it's first trip out, so no tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I love to capture the amazing things that surround us in this life that many people don't get to see or take for granted. Having traveled a large part of the US, I have been fortunate enough to see things that are inspiring and amazing and each of these special places is a memory for my family and I. To be able to share our once in a lifetime glimpses into the simple beauty of life is what photography really means to me.

Editing

I try to do as little post-processing as possible. I don't want to change the way the reality of the photo comes across. In this photo the only adjustment was a slight brightening to keep the grey day from being a distraction.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon D3200 with a 55-200mm for longer shots and 18-55mm for wider and closer in shots. I also carry an hb34 tulip hood, should I need it. As a beginning photographer, these basics will give you most of what you need. I also recommend a tripod for most shots for clarity.

Feedback

As I am not a professional, just an amateur with a professional dream, my best advice is to go out and just do it. The more photos you take, the more you can critique what pictures work best for you. Take pictures of everything around you, because everything is amazing to someone. And most of all, don't take anything for granted. That windmill you see on your way home every day or the skyscraper that is familiar to your city might just be a memory other people would love to see your viewpoint of!
