Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at a friend's house on the back porch. As a photographer, I am always looking for opportunities to take photographs. This photograph came about from a conversation where I offered to take photographs on the eve of her daughters graduation from high school.

Time

The photograph would have been taken in the late afternoon, with daylight savings in full effect.

Lighting

I'm not a fan of taking photographs in bright, direct sunlight. The only shading I had access to was the veranda roof, which either blocked the light completely or not at all. I was able to position the subject under the veranda roof so the sunlight was coming in on an angle for a more flattering photograph.

Equipment

The shot was taken with a Canon EOS 700D with a Canon 85mm lens.

Inspiration

With this particular photograph I feel it represents "Coming of Age Moment". It's that moment when an individual transitions from being a teenager to that of being a young adult who is keen and enthusiastic to face what the world has to offer.

Editing

The post-processing was completed with Adobe Lightroom. I deliberately cropped the picture to draw attention to the ladies' eyes and facial expression, I also completed some adjustments to the lighting because I felt the photograph felt more flattering to the individualI with a softer tone.

In my camera bag

For my kit bag I will generally back my Canon EOS 700D; a lens cleaning kit; tripod; off-camera flash; rspare camera battery; spare memory card; spare batteris for the off-camera flash. My lens selection will usually be more selected around what I am intending to photograph but in a pinch I will generally pack a 35mm, 24-70mm and a 18-270mm. This way I feel I have covered most of my bases as best as I can with my current gear selection.

Feedback

Two important things. The first is as a photographer, always be aware of your lighting, take five minutes to walk around and take some test shots of the area to see how it looks on the camera. If your photographing an individual, simply direct them to where you would like them and inform them you are simply taking test shots to check the background lighting. The second is to engage the individual you are talking to in conversation. It can take a little practice to do, but you simply start talking to the person in front of your camera. Making small talk and asking questions will have your subject relax and feel more comfortable.
