Location
During my 365 day project I mostly go to the forest next to my house because I don't have too much time during the week. The special thing about this photo is that it was taken on the dead-end track which goes through this forest and which I really love as a location because it can add more of a story or atmosphere to an image.Time
This photo was taken this winter right after scool at about 4 pm so the sun was already about to set and it got dark quickly. But I really wanted to capture this amazing fog so I had to be quick and had to shoot this self portrait in less than 30 minutes.Lighting
I always use natural lightning and it was perfect that day because of the fog and the dusk. It creates a mysterious atmosphere which I think really fits the image. I thought about adding two light spots in the background with a pocket lamp to imitate an approaching train but then decided to create a more open ended story.Equipment
I used my Canon 60d with a 50mm f/1.8 lens on a tripod and with a remote release to get myself focused.Inspiration
During December I made a list of 24 words and themes I wanted to use for a photo - just like an advent calendar. The word for the day I took this photo was "encounter" and I decided to take a picture framing the feeling of those fleeting encounters when you meet a shy animal like a fawn and you can feel their fragility and helpless fear. Also I wanted to place the model, myself, in the same position as the fawn and thats why I chose this special location - we are both at risk but caught in our encounter.Editing
I always do a lot of color editing in photoshop like adding all the blue and green tones here. And of course - and that was the most difficult part - I had to add the fawn. I took the picture of it a few months ago at the zoo so I had its posing in mind while taking the photo and could pose myself so that we would seem to interact. Then I had to seperate the fawn and add lightning and colors to it so it would fit into the picture. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 60d with me and the 50mm as well as a 30mm f/1.4 lense. For I take many self portraits my bag always contains my remote release and an extra remoter. My tripod sadly does not fit into the bag but I usually pack some props like fower crowns, glowing sticks or paper cranes instead.Feedback
The first thing to do is planning the picture: Think of a little story or an emotion you would like to capture and then translate it into a picture. Think of the location that would fit the planned shot as well as the posing, props and model. Then you only have to shoot it which won't be to difficult because you already know what to do and what you will add/ fix in the editing process. Planning is one of the most important things when taking conceptual photographs.
