Behind The Lens

Location

In September 2015 I went to Venice with the idea to spend some days alone with my camera. My main subject was to be the little island of Burano. But I also wanted a sunrise picture over the Canale Grande. I took this picture from the Academia Bridge.

Time

Of course I had to get up quite early, sunrise was at around 6h45. At that time Venice is just pure magic, almost empty. You are on your own. There were only two other people on the bridge. I took a lot of pictures this morning and this specific one around 7h45.

Lighting

It was important for me to show the golden glow of the early morning. I took of course a lot of pictures during that early morning, but to me this picture had just the right colour and somehow timelessness. Although there are modern boats in the foreground I think the scene could have been the same 100 or 200 years ago.

Equipment

At that time I had just bought my new Canon EOS 7D Mkii as I am first a wildlife photographer and only then comes travel photography. I used my Canon 15-85mm lens at 44mm. Unfortunately, for weight reasons I had only taken a gorilla pod with me, no tripod. I fixed it on the railing of the bridge and this proved to be sturdy enough. In the meantime I bought a very light yet sturdy tripod for the next trip.

Inspiration

Venice is a beautiful town, and when you leave the main places it is very calm. I wanted to show this idea of peacefulness and at the same time the grandeur of it. Plus, as many people I love the wonderful colours of sunrises and sunsets. I was sure that all this together would make for an interesting image.

Editing

This picture needed a bit of post-processing in Lightroom. The raw-file did not really show the wonderful warm orangy scene I had witnessed and the row of houses on the right was underexposed. I also enhanced the contrast.

In my camera bag

That depends where I go. If travelling in Asia I take my beloved EOS 7D mii with a Sigma 18-300mm, as I move a lot and prefer to travel light. For low-light situations I take my nifty-fifty with me, very handy and not heavy either, also good for candid portraits. When on safari in Africa or a birdwatching trip I take my Canon EF 100-400 mm L II lens. It gives me enough reach as we usually get quite close to the animals. For landscape shots I take my old Canon 60D with the 15-85mm, but on the next trip I'll take as well the 10-18mm. I also usually take a bean bag.

Feedback

Get up early, the earlier the better. You then not only get nice sunrise shots but mostly you wander through almost empty streets and can see how the city awakes. If you want a good sunset shot of Venice, take a vaporetto to the island of Burano - you'll have a wonderful view over the bay.
