Location
This picture was taken in my studio in Italy, a 4000 square feet space I used for more than 10 years.Time
I suppose it was afternoon but who cares? It's a studio light :)Lighting
The source are Broncolor Pulso lamps attached to 3200 Ws powerpacks. A bank in the front of the model and two styrofoarm cages on the sides to create the highlights on the contour of the model and let the background perfectly dark.Equipment
The image is made with a Canon 1Ds MkIII, a beautiful and cheap Canon 85mm 1.8 (I really suggest this lens, it has a great quality at a cheap price). No tripod, I prefer to be hand free to be free to move around the models. The most important part of this set are the Broncolor flashes and the Minolta Flashmeter and Spotmeter to measure the light. I come from film view cameras and I like to have the light perfect in the raw files.Inspiration
I professionally work mainly with commercial photography (industrial, architecture, catalogs etc.) and I was looking for different subjects to create some personal work and exit the comfort zone. It worked very well. Technically was not a problem to work with nude models, but I had to learn how personally deal with the subjects and create the comfort zone so they were able to express themselves and their soul. The turning point in the learning process was to pose nude for a female photographer and understand what the subject have to deal with psycologically. Every time I go out of my comfort zone I learn a lot about photography and myself and this project (the picture is a part of a wider project with different subjects) was not an exception.Editing
The post-processing is very limited. I use CaptureOne for the RAW conversion, I love it because gives me perfect files straight out of the camera. The light was really well balanced in studio and I just made the black and white conversion directly in CaptureOne. A little bit of mask and curve to darken the background a little and the image was done. On my website you can find tutorials on how to use CaptureOne. The model was really almost perfect so there is no retouch except few spots. In my camera bag
Usually I go around with my Canon 1Ds mkIII, the 17mm TS (best lens I ever had for the 135mm format), 24mm f1.4, 14mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 200mm f2, 45mm and 90mm TS. Lately I use a lot the Fuji X-Pro1, I have a regular camera and one converted by myself for infrared with a 720nm filter. Fuji lenses are superb and I use the 14mm, the 35 f1.4, 18mm and sometime a Samyang 12mm f2.0. I still have and use sometime my film view camera (I love it!!) with some lenses and my Film various Hasselblad. But The best thing I always have with me are my eyes, my brain and a piece of black cardboard with a hole the size of the sensor that I use to explore the subject before I take my camera off the bag. Equipment are important but remember that great photographers were able to create art with a 135mm film and a 50mm lens, nothing more. Bring your eyes with you, always, also when you do not have a camera.Feedback
If you like to try with nude photography there are many advice, some general and some specific for nudes: 1) RTFM!!! Know all the basics (exposure!) perfectly because if you are not ready the model will feel the incompetence and start to be uncomfortable (you will look to her more as a voyeur that a photographer) 2) RTFM!!! Know your camera perfectly, same reasons. 3) Try to be on the other side of the camera to understand the feeling. 4) Specifically for nudes learn the respect of the person and her/his spaces 5) If you are a man, remember that there is enough blood in your body to be able to continue to use your brain also when some blood is going south!!! 6) In a studio situation keep yourself in the dark, the model must perceive you but not be concentrated on you. 7) Learn the composition (Rudolph Arnheim must be your god!) 8) ...have fun and be yourself! ... 9) Never ever forget to have the model release signed!!!!
