Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Venice, Italy last year (2015) in summer. I am a self-taught photographer and always wanted to make my way into travel photography. Fortunately, I was able to travel to Europe last year (for the first time) and explore, learn & enjoy landscape photography. Even though I don't get to travel a lot, taking pictures of travel is the most fulfilling thing for me. Every photo I take is a learning experience for me and I enjoy every bit of it.

Time

This is actually one of my favorite images of Venice. This image is a composite of 2 shots taken 30minutes apart at same location. It was beautiful summer day of July and my husband and me were taking a stroll on the romantic Venice streets next to Grand Canal when everyone around us started looking in one direction. It was a blood/full moonrise and it looked stunning. Luckily I had my 70-200mm lens and tripod with me. I took the first shot to get a shaper image of moon with all the details on it and then 30 minutes later it the scenic grand canal at longer exposure. These images were taken around 8:50pm to 9:20pm.

Lighting

As every photo I take is a learning experience for me, I wanted to follow the leading lines rule of photography and draw the attention of viewer to the beautiful red full moon. I decided that the colorful lights from the moving boats would be a perfect way to ta grab the attention, apart from the surrounding lights of building and lamppost.

Equipment

This image was taken by Nikon D610, As I mentioned above this is a composite of 2 pictures shot same day almost 30 apart, the moon's image was taken with settings 1/200sec, f/5.6 ISO 250 at 200mm and the entire grand canal scene with settings 25sec, f/14, ISO160 at 70mm (70-200mm lens).

Inspiration

I always love taking pictures of moon, but I had no idea that it was a full moon (that too red colored one) that particular day. I was lucky to have been carrying my zoom lens. The moment I saw the full moon I knew I had to capture the beauty that is Grand Canal, with one of my favorite things in universe, the moon.

Editing

Mostly when I take landscape pictures I keep the post-processing to minimal. With this shot I adjusted the white balance of the moon, before merging it with the Grand Canal scene. Then I increased the vibrancy, sharpness and corrected the perspective in adobe lightroom.

In my camera bag

To be honest I just have 3 lenses ( I wish to have more), 70-200mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.8 and a 14-24mm f/2.8. Depending upon what type of photography I am going to do I carry my lenses and tripod. For landscape photography I usually carry 70-200mm and 14-24mm with tripod, but if I am doing portraits and family photoshoots I usually carry 50mm, 70-200mm, tripod and a collapsable reflector. I try my best to keep my bag as light as possible.

Feedback

During my trip to Europe, I realized as a landscape photographer you need lots of patience. To get that best shot you need to wait for the right time, light and be persistent. Even though some people say that a good photographer does not have to take multiple shots to get a great picture, I do believe that taking multiple shots of the same scene ,while playing around with settings is the best idea (at least for me) to perfect the image you want.
