I have had this idea in my head for such a long time, it was really bothering me that I could not do it because of all the other things I needed to do. I have to prioritise my MA thesis and work.
However, I just could not get this idea out of my head. Therefore, I decided to give myself a break and do this shoot. I contacted a fellow photographer (who has the look that I wanted) to model for me, and asked one of my favourite female model, whom I know would be able to pull the right emotions that was needed for this theme.
The idea came to me when I was shooting a client 6 months ago. While we were taking a break, I took some close-up photos of the roses that were in the garden. I liked the photo so much that I ended up using it as my cover for my private profile with the quote "But he who dares not grasp the thorn, should never crave the rose" by Anne Bronte.
I guess you can say that Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was the inspiration for this series with an open interpretation of the ending. After I finished editing the photos, I showed it to a good friend to see what story she got out of it. Here’s her reply:
“I see two people who innocently seek the love of one another, but become consumed by it, destroying the one they love. Like being pricked by a rose thorn? In the end hurting themselves as well as the other. The love ending in tragedy.”
I have my own interpretation. What are your interpretations? I would love to know your thoughts.
A special thanks to all of the people involved in this photoshoot. Assembling a competent team is critical to the success or failure of a shoot and I am so lucky to be around such talented individuals. Thank you for being a part of my photographic journey.
