This shoot was one of the most unplanned shoot I have done this year, since I couldn't find all of the elements that I needed. Prior to the shoot, I have already bought different coloured-butterflies and my plan was to use light-coloured butterflies to symbolise "good". I wanted to create a story of a girl who chose to stay away from humanity and close her eyes and ears from “evil”, so that she will not speak ill or do bad things. Now here’s the twist, when I was shooting this I decided to use a dark-colored butterfly instead. This was because for some reason the light-coloured ones doesn’t fit the whole concept. So my thoughts were, is it really possible for this innocent girl to stay innocent? Then I played with the thought that maybe the butterflies were not there to symbolise “good” and prevent her from hearing, seeing and eventually speaking and doing bad things. Maybe the butterflies were there to corrupt her slowly. Whispering mischievous things in her ears or making her see things, which will eventually destroy her innocence. It symbolises the things we hear and see as we grow up. Let’s use media as an example. There are some people, who would argue that what we see on the telly, video games, movies etc., makes us think and act more violently. When we see evil, we internalise it, which means that it becomes a part of us. Eventually this “evil” needs to find its way out, which makes us do evil things. It’s the same thing if you eat and digest food that’s already bad or rotten. When your body starts digesting it and realises that it’s not good, your body releases it quickly.
