One of the most notable landmarks in Nebraska, Chimney Rock appears as a beacon on the horizon of seemingly endless prairies. For weary travelers, it was seen as a sign that they were heading in the correct westward direction. Over the past several hundred years, the spire has changed height from the wind, rain and even lightning. History suggests that it was once as tall as nearby Scotts Bluff and stood over 800 feet above the plains, but today stands just under 300 feet.
