Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the balcony of my apartment in Northcliff, Johannesburg.

Time

Mid-morning - 11ish.

Lighting

This photo was all about the layers of transparency and reflection, building a story more with that than with the actual light.

Equipment

My good old Nikon D3100 with standard lens. Nothing else - hand held. I am very basic in my equipment, because for me it's more important to develop your eye and not miss anything out there than the amount of equipment and knowledge you have - that will come naturally over time.

Inspiration

My ex and I fooled around all the time with all sorts of ideas. The camera was part of the company - sometimes the shoots were planned - other times we just shot what we saw in the world around us that we made extra creative together. This particular photo is from the latter bunch. I noticed the layers, and I noticed my ex looking quite Buddha-like in his attire and heavenly kiss.

Editing

No post-processing.

In my camera bag

Very little at this stage! Nikon 3100, standard lens, Nikon DX 55-200 lens. Battery, battery charger, other accessories. That's it! Still working on building up my equipment - it's only been a year or so that I've had my first proper digital camera apart from my cellphone cams.

Feedback

Just play, and play some more with your equipment. In the beginning I had to take 1000 pictures to get 1 good one. Eventually, if you keep on looking and taking pictures, it's 1/100. Then 1/10. Or so I think it works - I'm not there yet. Gary Player the legendary South African golf player famously said, "the harder you practice, the luckier you get."
