Behind The Lens

Location

I photographed this Cape Robin in Dainfern South Africa.

Time

I managed to capture the picture at around 10 am.

Lighting

Light being fairly soft . A touch overcast.

Equipment

Using a Nikon D800. hand held , with a Sigma 150-500 lens.

Inspiration

These Robins are rewarding birds to photograph. They have a sweet call and hop around not to shy. I love them.

Editing

I finished it in Lightroom as I shoot raw only. The pic was only cleaned and sharpened. I am not a great fan moving to far from what I saw when taking the frame.

In my camera bag

I carry with me D800, 60mm Nikon Macro f2.8 , 80-400 EV Nikon , 24-70 f2.8 Nikon. and a 28-300 f3.5 Nikon.

Feedback

When photographing any type of wild life , you will benefit by spending time to observe the way it moves ,acts, flies, feeds,.How nervous the species that you are after Is, is. Your movements should be slow. It is wise to anticipate what the target is going to do next ,then be ready for it. Should you be out hunting have the camera primed for the type of action you anticipate. For example Capturing a flying bird.Use the fastest shutter ,IOS combination that will give the sharpest ,most saturated picture with the least noise. Most people fool them selves saying programs remove noise. They do, and shift sharpness and saturation. Adrenalin takes over if the subject is one that you have been after for a long while. When that happens all rules go out and you push the shutter at its highest speed . The camera gets no time to focus . What you end up with , camera shake , out of focus, bad crop . 28 frames sitting taking space on your card, you so want to see it on the Mac, as big as you can. to be disappointed. It is wise to know your equipment back to front practice, practice, practice before you take any photographs . Where you can use a tripod, no hand held photographs will ever match up to the steady ness of a tripod, it will slow you down giving more keepers and eventually all will come naturally and the confidence will build. Be harsh on your self regarding quality It is the only way you will improve. I learn every day a new something small or big comes to light This makes it so exciting. Get out , plan your day, be prepared, know what equipment to use. Early morning or afternoon light will give a great advantage . Horizontal light behind you gives best colour rendering . The long shadows will set body in your pictures that 12 o clock sun destroys. midday sun seems to press all subjects flat.
