Behind The Lens

Location
Just off of Lake Pontchartrain, in Madisonville Louisiana lies an unusual neighborhood called Guste Island. This swamp is the southern border of this wonderous space.
Time
This was taken at what could be called "feeding time", dusk to the rest of us. The swamp comes to life as the sun goes down! Alligators snap their jaws at their prey as the fin of a drum rolls across the surface of the water. Herons, Egrets and Pelicans swoop down on to the water scoop up dinner. Incredible!
Lighting
Despite the impact of humidity in my hair, our liquid air definitely gives us amazing cloud formations and insanely beautiful sunsets. Because of the heavy clouds we are gifted with wonderful light filtration.
Equipment
This one was taken with my very first dslr, Nikon D3000 with kit 18-55 mm lens.
Inspiration
With the just a ripple on the surface of the water to bend the light, the entire scene was soul stirring.
Editing
Since this was one of my early shots, post processing was fairly foreign to me. I managed to change a few levels and add a vignette. Back then, that is about all I knew.
In my camera bag
These days I am still shooting with a D300, typically I stick to one lens nikor, 18-200 mm for the simplicity of it all. Recently I have acquired a few film cameras to fine tune my skills.
Feedback
As a completely self taught shutterbug, I have to say that anyone with a little interest should explore the works of others, read and experiment as much as possible. Play with light, aim right into the sun, learn the effect of light on your subject. The more you explore and find new subject matter the more you will evolve as a photographer. Open your mind to criticism. Even if it stings a bit, criticism means that you are not only being noticed, but that you have an opportunity to grow.
