Location
This beach has a specific name, but is more commonly known as Martin's Beach...the location of a controversial coastal access case between the state and an owner of the property on this beach.Time
SunsetLighting
When the sun sets close to the horizon, a photographer can capture the reflection off the sheen of the wet sand or rocks. The sun will never set behind the hole in the rock.Equipment
Sony A7rII, Feisol tripod, Arca Swiss Monoball Head, solid neutral density filter (likely 3-stop)Inspiration
I am always attracted to rocks with holes in it, especially if the hole is facing the horizon (versus pointing into land). This location is one of the hidden gems of the San Francisco Bay Area, and was also used in the Robin Williams movie "Bicentennial Man".Editing
General vignetting and likely a boost of saturation. In my camera bag
Camera, 2 lenses (wide and telephoto zoom), tripod, solid neutral density filters, boots.Feedback
Scout your elements during the "bad" light, which is most of the day, but pre-visualize what it will look like at the end of the day. A lot of elements may not be pretty, but they can be photogenic. Photogenic elements used together at the right time can make a composition much stronger than a "pretty" element.
