Behind The Lens

Location

This one was taken in my country, Romania. I was in the mountains at the end of November, last year, 2015. The atmospheric conditions were very difficult, being what people call often "bad weather". Not only that the sky was overcast, but the clouds were low in the sky and often I had periods of fog. Above, on the mountain range, everything was totally white and I couldn't see but a few meters in front of me. It was white out and the temperatures were freezing cold. I took this one in Baiului Mountains, a low altitude mountain range in my country where I often like to shoot during winter. They're not very steep but climbing and trekking there is not a walk in the park also.

Time

As I remember, it was later in the morning when I took it. Around 10 or 11 a.m. But when one shoots in these kind of conditions, the time of day doesn't matter at all.

Lighting

Light, as I always say, is the most important aspect in any photograph. This one is no exception either. So, the light of the sun was very important because it contributed to the mood and atmosphere of the place. Without it, it wouldn't be this interesting. The sun was seldom casting a few shy rays here and there, but when it did, the moments where exquisitely beautiful. They were light shows to remember.

Equipment

I shot handheld this one, because the atmosphere was changing rapidly, the light as well. And so, I had to move quickly to work the shot as much as I could and create the composition which really tells the story of that moment. I had my regular camera body, a Canon 600D, and my wide-angle zoom, a Sigma 17-50mm.

Inspiration

The mood and the atmosphere was everything. There are some times in which one has to work the shot a lot, in order to obtain the photographs that need to be made, and other times in which one doesn't need much in order to create a compelling image. One is, then, I dare to say, blessed with the most precious moment of the shooting session, whether it's outdoors or indoors. This is a case in which I had to turn around to admire the view and I was utterly surprised. This was the greatest moment I've ever witnessed in Nature and I dare to say that it was the kind of moment in which I had to look behind me, otherwise I would've missed a great photographic opportunity.

Editing

I did my regular little bit of exposure and contrast adjustments in order for the image to pop up, a little bit of clarity, not too much, here and there and of course, I converted it to black and white because the colours weren't adding anything to the picture. That was all.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 600D, two lenses, a wide-angle zoom (17-50mm) and a telephoto zoom (75-300mm), a few filters, a remote shutter, a spare battery for the camera, a tripod and a few cleaning cloths. A minimal equipment. I never travel with lots of gear.

Feedback

As I said before, there are moments in which one has to turn around. If you look behind you, you will probably witness a great photographical moment, something that is worth not only remembering but also recording in camera. There are great photographical opportunities anywhere all the time. You just need to be open minded and pay attention to what's around you. Needless to say that is very important to master exposure and composition in order to make great images. Otherwise it wouldn't do you any good to witness wonderful photographical moments if you don't know how to capture them in camera and create great photo compositions with them. We don't need to travel to the most beautiful iconic places in order to make great photographs.
