Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my garage that I convert into a studio during the cooler months of the year.

Time

The photo was taken around mid day.

Lighting

The only source of lighting in the photo are the LED Christmas lights wrapped around the model and held in her hands.

Equipment

Camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T2i using an EFS18-55mm lens on a tripod with remote trigger.

Inspiration

I like the idea of unusual lighting. I got the idea for using LED lights wrapped on a model a couple of years ago and have had some interest results and success with the concept. This model wanted to do this type of shoot specifically. During the shoot she wanted to try adding motion to see what the results were. After one shot, I got the idea of putting the red and blue lights (battery operated) in her hands to create a stronger and more colorful effect.

Editing

Only post processing I did on this was to remove hot pixels the long exposure 3 or 4 seconds, caused.

In my camera bag

Canon EOS Rebel T2i, EFS-18-55mm lens, EFS55-250mm lens and speedlight

Feedback

Longer exposures work the nest, with a lower ISO. The model is going to need to hold still during the exposure. Make sure the model has good footing and try to figure poses that allow the base to be stable. Having the camera on a tripod with a remote trigger helps to minimize vibration noise and give a sharper result. Focus the camera with the model in position with the room lights on, and then turn off autofocus so the camera does not have problems focusing in the dark.
