Location
This photo of this haystack rock was taken in Pacific City, Oregon. So this rock is called a haystack rock. There are many off of the Washington, Oregon and California coasts. I named this one "King Kong with a Rat Tail" because I can see the forehead, eyebrows, eye indent, nose and mouth of a gorilla. The little tail in back is the bonus rat tail.Time
This photo was taken at sunset on October 24, 2007 and was taken at 6:00pm. Sunsets in the PNW can be quite stunning especially when our coastline is as beautiful as it is with lots of haystack rocks.Lighting
Not really, I point and shoot most of the time on auto as I am still learning and have lots to learn about settings. The sun was close to setting.Equipment
I took it with my Canon Powershot S3. No tripod.Inspiration
It was my 50th birthday and I had no idea dinner was going to be at this place. It was a surprise from my husband. In fact, we had the Pelican Pub and Brewery banquet room all to ourselves with windows spanning the side facing the ocean. He had asked me where I wanted to go and I had another place in mind but I was looking for a sunset and that direction looked promising. This restaurant is 22 miles away from Tillamook. It's a good thing I chose it because he had reservations there with flowers, balloons and a gift and a whole room to ourselves along a server and everything. So, this was inspiration in itself but the sun made an appearance and it turned out to be just a gorgeous sunset. I believe it to be God's handiwork. I do not think photos can do it justice at all, but I try to do my best to capture the essence of what I am seeing with my own eyes.Editing
No and I usually do not. I might crop but I didn't with this one.In my camera bag
I have a new camera now that is a Nikon D5200. My bag usually contains my macro, my wide angle, my smaller telephoto, my medium telephoto and my large telephoto (as you can tell, I like my telephotos). I also keep extra SD cards, batteries and chargers. I do try to take my tripod, but I will muscle through with a telephoto. I know just how to hold and prop myself to keep it steady. If I do need my tripod, I take two legs off of it and use it as a monopod. I need a larger and better bag because I do use them all. At the time I took this photo, I only had batteries and the Canon Powershot S3 in my bag.Feedback
Do not go anywhere without your camera. If you have to turn around and go back and you can do it safely, do it. Take lots of photos, throw out the "meh" ones and keep the best. Don't stop at one shot. A lot of times, things are missed because there may be absolutely no place to pull over and the moment is gone. That has happened to me many many times. But always another, even better opportunity shows up. Just keep shooting and think about thirds, think about not centering the photo, think about the background. Most of all, just enjoy capturing the beauty around you.
