I took this photo in my living room! I had a sheet that I hung between a few kitchen stools to mimic a backdrop. I was 13 at the time - and it was my first time trying to recreate what I now know would be considered a studio set!Time
In the afternoon!Lighting
It’s actually natural light! When I was making my mock studio, I recreated it several times but realized facing towards the upstairs sliding glass window had the best lighting. Once you’re above the tree tops in Washington state, daylight is always on your side haha.Equipment
I was using a very beginner DSLR (I am leaning towards my Nikon d40x, but around this time I was borrowing equipment from my schools photography department and they let me swap out with different equipment.Inspiration
At the time - I was a moody 13-year-old who used art to express some frustration. I always wanted to model, but it was around this time I heard the harsh reality that I was too short. I then had the idea that being a make-up artist could satisfy that, only to be told in my traditional upbringing that it was not a career choice. It was definitely inspired by what I was going through, and an perhaps even an outlet to ‘prove people wrong’.Editing
Yes! This was taken almost a decade ago before I had formally discovered photoshop. From what I remember, my post processing for this image was a mix between an outdated version of photoshop, and Ribbit / Picnik (the free online editing sites that gained a lot of popularity around 2010)In my camera bag
Today I use a Canon 5D Mark ii with a 50mm 1.4 as my portrait and a 35mm for everything else.Feedback
You don’t need to wait for anything! Part of how I fell in love with photography and modeling was trying some unconventional but creative ways. If you want to start, you have to somewhere. You don’t need to invest right away - especially in 2020! Don’t have a model? Be your own! Don’t have the lighting equipment? Make it! There are solutions to everything if you can find the beauty in what you already have.
