Behind The Lens

Location

I took it in my hometown, Joliet, at the local Applebee's. I was having dinner with a few friends and one of my friends was looking out the window and she looked so thoughtful and beautiful. I saw the opportunity and ran with it.

Time

This is one of my favorite photos of my best friend. We were having a late dinner with a few other mutual friends. It was a spontaneous dinner which ended up producing my favorite spontaneous photos of her. I took it on November 28 around 8:30pm.

Lighting

I wanted the photo to look like she was thinking about her past. Many people told me that it looked like she was traveling somewhere and on train or bus. I took that information and used it to my advantage. I made it look like it was the middle of the night and that she was in solitude and running from something.

Equipment

The photo was actually taken on an iPhone 5s. No other equipment was used except a bit of photoshop to manipulate the lighting.

Inspiration

My friend who is modeling in the photo. As I said before, it was completely spontaneous and I saw the opportunity for a great photo and ran with it. My friends are my inspiration for almost all the photos I take, I couldn't do anything without their support.

Editing

The only post-processing I did was manipulating the light around my friend using Photoshop. I made it so the viewers only focus on her, not what's behind or around her. She is the center of attention and the light kind of puts a spotlight on her.

In my camera bag

Since I'm still learning a lot about photography and cameras, I only really have my iPhone. I'm trying to save up for a nice camera and equipment so hopefully my bag will expand soon.

Feedback

Don't force a photo. If you're using a model and are trying to capture certain things, don't force it. Just let the energy flow and you'll get your desired look or even something better eventually.
