Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Gettysburg, right behind one of the major battle lines.

Time

This photo was taken at dusk, so at about 6:00-6:30. I chose this time because the of the position of the sun in the sky was perfect for this photograph. This time informally called the "Golden Hour" is one of the best time to take pictures. "Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold" (Frost).

Lighting

Photographing the sun and sunsets especially is always interesting; because of how much light is available, you are able to manipulate the lighting using ISO and shutter speed to convey any kind of mood you want to.

Equipment

I used a Canon T5 with a 18-55 kit lens.

Inspiration

I adore the power of contrasting forces in art. Gettysburg was a bloody, violent battle, and the photo that I took conveys the opposite. It shows a beautiful landscape, and without the stone wall and cannon left behind, nobody would think twice about wether one of America's darkest days played out under the magnificent sunset.

Editing

I used Aperture to fine-tune the RAW photo I took, and exported it to a .jpeg. I would recommend that all photographers use RAW, because it brings more life out of a picture.

In my camera bag

I have 4 lenses in my bag: One 18-55 IS II Kit lens, One EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III, One Opteka Fisheye lens, and a Canon 50mm lens. I also carry around lots of lens wipes (Very Important) and filters for different shooting circumstances.

Feedback

My advice would be to look for the extraordinary in the ordinary. Photography is all about sharing an experience, and a beautiful part of it is that nobody has the exact same point of view, so every photograph taken is a glimpse into somebody's journey.
