Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in a park near my home. I frequently shoot there, but I found a new area the day that I took this photo and I was very excited!

Time

I took this photo in the late afternoon. It was starting to get dark and I was afraid that I was going to lose the light before I got the shot, but I ended up with one perfect picture that was just what I was trying for!

Lighting

It was getting darker and darker as the sun was starting to go down, so I did the best that I could using natural light. I added extra light into the photo during my post processing.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. I also used a silver reflector to add extra light to my subject's face and her eyes.

Inspiration

I saw a lot of different portraits using tulle as a prop and I absolutely loved them. I went out and bought a bunch of tulle and told my sister that I wanted to photograph her with it. I had the tulle wrapped around her for lots of the shots, and then at one point I decided to try it on her head like a veil and I absolutely loved the look!

Editing

Yes! I did basic editing in Photoshop. I brightened the photo to add some extra light into it. I brightened the whites of my subjects eyes just a bit to make her gorgeous blue eyes really pop! I darkened the background a bit with a curves layer to really put the focus on my beautiful subject.

In my camera bag

I usually have a Canon 5D Mark II and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens. I also almost always use a silver reflector. I always like my subject's face to be nice and bright. I also love how the reflector really pops their eyes and makes them look nice and bright!

Feedback

I learned from working with tulle for the first time that it can be very difficult to work with. It doesn't always stay where you want it to. You just have to be patient and keep adjusting the tulle and taking more shots. My subject's hair kept sticking to the tulle when I was putting it up on her head. I'd recommend using some static guard on the tulle before shooting. I wish I would have thought to do that! It was a decently windy day which was frustrating at first, but in the end, I like how the wind gave the tulle and her hair a bit of movement.
