Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in rural Saskatchewan, Canada on a random weekend road trip I was taking. :)

Time

When on my random weekend road trip to take some pics, this area drew me in. I pulled to the side of the road and stepped out of my old beat up car I had at the time. It was a morning pic when a storm was brewing. The deep green, pop of red and white on the buildings and the fabulous stormy sky got my attention all at once. :)

Lighting

This moment was literally just before the clouds opened up a wicked down pouring of rain and wind. I didn't use any filters, or flash at all, just framed and shot. :)

Equipment

The camera I used at the time was a simple HP 35 mm point and shoot camera. No fancy bells or whistles, just the simplest of camera as I was just beginning getting into photography at the time. I relied more on my eye for the picture and my feelings, not the camera's capabilities. :)

Inspiration

This picture was pure instinct. It just grabbed my gut and made my heart beat real fast. :) Once framed in and taken it made me smile. For me, all those feelings makes for the perfect picture. :) I could just as easily have called this picture "Calm Before the Storm" as the storm hit right after I took it. Something was definitely in the air that day. :) It was a magical day for my photography road trip. :)

Editing

I did no editing of any kind with this picture. Just posted it. It truly is perfect in my eyes. :)

In my camera bag

I carry this same HP 35 mm Camera with me still as it still can take amazing pictures, but, I have since moved to a Canon Rebel T6. I have two very basic and inexpensive tripods that I use. I also take photos with my iPhone 7. I have just recently purchased a light ring with three different filters, again very basic.

Feedback

I have since this photo become disabled, often unable to get around to do my photography......my advice in general but specific to any creative project is engage as soon as your gut, your heart and your mind let you know that it's a special moment, even if you don't have great equipment, even if the equipment you have is inexpensive or you yourself don't have a lot of experience. There is so much you miss out on in life, especially creatively speaking if you don't engage as soon as you have what I call, "All The Feels". As soon as I start getting a gut response, my heart beat gets faster, my mouth goes dry and my mind starts whirling with possibility......take the shot, grab the paint brush, start the sewing machine, whatever that creative moment is telling you by what you are feeling.....don't lose the moment. Every one of the photos I have ever taken that gets the most attention I've taken with this in mind and with just a no frills point and shoot 35 mm Camera. It's easy to rely on great equipment to get a great photo, it's even more exhilarating and rewarding when you rely on yourself to translate what you feel through what comes out in the final picture. Spend the most on time spent with exploring what you feel through the lens with basic equipment, build instinct first, then upgrade your equipment.
