One of the most interesting animal behavior I saw while photographing American Bald Eagles and other wildlife in Alaska in November was the fighting of the birds over the same Salmon when there were many other ones swimming right next to them. It was almost as if they were establishing dominance, hierarchy, and strength more than trying to get a good meal. It appeared as if the eagles would wait until one did the hard work of capturing the fish and then try to steal it from the eagle. Even the seagulls, crows, hawks, and other birds of prey would sneak in to get their share of the meal while the eagles were distracted fighting one another. It was so bizarre to me because of the abundance of food slowly swimming within their reach.
