Behind The Lens

Location

this is the first lot of franjipani flowers on my tree in my backyard in Sydney.

Time

we were sitting around after a spring BBQ talking with my in laws about the plants actually growing in the garden (more of a drag racer and photographer than a gardiner). being fairly new to DLSR photography at the time, I was playing around with settings and light in the late afternoon sun, and managed to pull this one off thankfully.

Lighting

the afternoon sun was behind me, and playing with the settings on the camera (and macro experimentation) I was happy with the amount of back light that you can see in the top, as well as the shade around the tree.

Equipment

the camera that took this shot is a Canon 1000D with an EF-S 18-55mm lens.

Inspiration

as before, I was experimenting with a new camera, so learning new settings. The colours of the white and yellow flowers in contrast to the dark greens and browns of the leaves to the light wood colour of the fence made a good (well in my eyes) interpretation of the start of spring.

Editing

not at the time of photo.

In my camera bag

I have recently upgraded to a canon 5D MK iii with a Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG lens, Canon 70-300mm F4 IS lens. I shoot a lot at the off street Drag Racing at Sydney Dragway in western Sydney, so I also use a Yongnuo speedlite and Hoya UV filters. A few 16gb and a 64Gb memory card for all the shots there and a couple of spare batteries (haven't got around to getting a battery grip yet)

Feedback

Play around with your settings, get to know your camera and gear. Think about how the photo can look, will it be too bright or dark depending on daylight/ night? Think of how you can use the current weather to your advantage. I think practice makes perfect, and don't be afraid to ask for advice or criticism from peers or other enthusiasts (it's how we learn)
