Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Bridget City Texas. There is this really great plays cape that is shaped like a castle. It has towers and bridges and tons of play areas for the kids. We had a pretty rainy weekend so it was the only place that wasn't flooded. It ended up being the perfect place to take the portraits because the kids could play and the castle walls created a perfect backdrop and blocked the bright sun that decided to appear just in time for out session.

Time

We tried to get out early and grab the pictures before the sun was high in the sky but with toddlers they don't always work with your schedule. It was a little closers to 11 am when we finally got to the castle to grab the shots and the sun was shining bright! I was a little worried it would be too much but the castle tower cast just the right amount of Shadow to get this gorgeous shot.

Lighting

The lighting here was completely natural the only filter was the shadow cast from the tower. I was lucky the sun decided to show because it may have been too dim otherwise.

Equipment

I always shoot my portraits with my Canon 7d. I was using a 35-80 zoom lens here. I wanted to be sure I could move quickly with the baby and not have to have her wait on me to set up. The camera was hand held. It make it easier for me to be a blessing to move with the subject, with the kids you never know when they are going to do something you have to catch.

Inspiration

This was a session I set up because it was just before her 1st birthday and I wouldn't be there for it. I wanted to catch her timeless adorable baby face.

Editing

I didn't do much in post for this. Just a little contrast touch up. It really turned out great straight from the disk.

In my camera bag

I usually have my Canon 7d and a few lenses mostly zooms in varying sizes and that's about it.

Feedback

I would just say if you're trying to get something like this look for soft natural light and have fun with the kids.
