Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was a huge risk-taking moment for me. We were in the 11 o'clock light, the room was white, the curtains were white and the bed spread was white. I really wanted the light-airy look without over exposing the shot. The bride and I just talked casually about her morning and the rest of the day. We were in the bed room of the bride's sister, which was in a small, South GA town off the interstate.

Time

This image was a complete surprise to me. I just knew the window was going to be over exposed due to the mid day light. When I looked at the image in Lightroom, my chest just swelled up. The light was so complimentary to the bride's beautiful features. It was everything I had hoped for.

Lighting

This lighting... Man I wish I could recreate it. We had the mid day sun being diffused by sheer white curtains. I also used my reflector to bounce light onto the other side of the bride's face.

Equipment

This was shot by a Nikon D700, 50 1.8 mm at 2.8 f/p. My exposure was set to 300 in manual mode.

Inspiration

The bride's dress was so light and airy, I wanted to capture that same look in her bridals. She's a very relaxed person by nature so I felt like the most fitting prop would be a bed.

Editing

I don't like to add a lot of retouching to my images outside of darkening eyelashes and smoothing skin (a bit). I used Lightroom and VSCO film presets to finalize this image.

In my camera bag

I always keep my trusty D700 and 50 with me. It's my walk- about lens, if you will. The 85 is right behind my 50. I feel most comfortable with prime lenses. I can trust them and I can trust my self to make a picture work.

Feedback

Lighting is constantly changing and moving. If you feel comfortable using natural light, a portable reflector is absolutely necessary. Use the natural light given to you.
