Behind The Lens

Location

This young lady is my oldest granddaughter and we were at a festival in Michigan. we were waiting for a seat for lunch and it was in an old train station... so I just had her walk a few yards to get this shot

Time

lunch time at a busy popular resturant! always a wait, so we were just killing time

Lighting

Natural light then converted to black and white in photo shop. Her outfit looked so old fashioned it needed the black and white tones

Equipment

this is shot with a Nikon 5200 hand held but a 200 mm lens for perspective. My favorite lens

Inspiration

I was shooting stock photos that day of the festival we were at, and my granddaughter age 6 wanted to dress up. this photo as just at first to keep her busy while we waited for a table at a resturant! not planned, but I loved how it turned out

Editing

I always shoot in raw, run through lightroom and post process in photo shop. Converted to black and white and croped, that was it. I try my best to get my omages right while shooting, to avoid spending hours on a photo

In my camera bag

I am still a Nikon shooter, but I have upgraded to the d500 for the low light abilities and the larger sensor size. I have 6 lenses, a few fast lenses even, but my favorite is the 35 to 300 zoom. Its not a fast lens but on a sunny day it gives me great bokah and a nice bluring of the back ground

Feedback

Watch for trains! no, seriously, I use train tracks ofton when shooting people becuse its very symbolic for time passing... and people walking away is always a good ending shot for a slide show or a book. My granddaughter is growing so fast, and this photo has always been a favorite. The mood of her clothing, the black and white to age it, the tracks and her walking away, all conveyed to me that her childhood was going as fast as a train and to enjoy every moment we can
