Behind The Lens

Location

Taken on the shores of lake MIchigan in St joseph, the light house and this beacon became ice sculptures by mother nature. it was perfect to see this bundled up kayaker paddle around the icy lake to add more magic to this image

Time

this was late afternoon but the sky was overcast and the sun was just starting to set, creating a soft box effect over everything. I remember it was really cold!

Lighting

Of course flash would do not good for this image since I was pretty far away using a 300 mm lens on my nikon hand held. so natural light was all it took.

Equipment

Nikon 5200 with a 300mm zoom

Inspiration

lake michigan doesn't always give us this amazing ice sculpture, but wen the wind and temps are just right this is the effect we get and I had to be out there to capture this!

Editing

i always shoot in raw, but since the lighting was near perfect, very little was done to this image. basic crop, levels, adjust color... there

In my camera bag

I have upgraded to the d500 for te larger sensor, and have a few fast prime lenses, but u big 28-300 clunker is still my very favorite lens and I use it a lot. its also a nikon, and so sharp. I wish i was faster, but i compensate with higher iso if I have to

Feedback

when shooting in winter cold conditions, make sure extra batteries are in your inside coat pocket! nothing drains a battery faster than cold... and you would hate to get out to the site and that perfect image and have a dead camera!
