Behind The Lens

Location

As a newly self taught photographer at the time of this image, I was on the hunt to take a photograph that would stand out, one that express who I am. I took this image in Box Hill,

Time

This image is the perfect expression of being at the right place at the right time. Allowing yourself to be open to your surroundings, paying attention to every bit of detail to what is there around you. The time of this image was an early 6am rise on the peak of a hill, where the fog has settled and laid rest.

Lighting

The lighting was brilliant for this image. There was no distractions in the background which allowed the bokeh to enhance the focus onto the show and the leaf. The fog and low light enabled me to create an emotional and expressive moment.

Equipment

At the time I had my first camera which was a Canon 700D with a Canon 55-250mm 4.5f ISii lens. I had a tripod with me but I laid on the floor to take this shot, so my tripod was not needed.

Inspiration

The shoe was never placed there by myself, but it was left there and looked like it for some time. The inspiration I had from this was life and people. As we grow up we become Stressed and more financially driven to do things or be somebody. In doing this we leave things behind, leave our true selves and leave others in the process. This image was to express, to others and to show myself that, we cannot let our playful selves be lost or abandoned in the process of what ever we do. It's what keeps us being us. It helps us be who we are, when we have our innocent side to us still, we will discover that we don't need to be someone or something we are not to be great. But for us to have fun and enjoy who we are, enjoy life, enjoy what and who we have in life.

Editing

I did do some post processing, but very little. I took one shot and it was in colour. I individually selected the shoe and leaf (my subjects) to stay in colour to emphasise my message, but I changed the background black and white. I use the process of dodge and burn on the highlights and shadows on the shoe just to brighten and darken some areas which did take time.

In my camera bag

Because I am a landscape photographer I carry mainly 3 lenses. (Tamron 24-70mm 2.8, Tamron 15-30mm 2.8 and Tamron 70-200mm 2.8) I always use my Nikon D810. Spare batteries normally 3, spare SD cards from 250GB all the way down to 16GB. My tripod obviously a carbon fibre Giottos as it is hard wearing and most importantly, light. Flash light, camera cleaning kit, remote shutter release for long exposures. Lee filters sw150 big stopper, polariser, nd soft grad filters. 2 lee filters adapters for my Tamron 15-30mm and Tamron 24-70mm. All carried in a case4life camera bag.

Feedback

Don't be everything to everyone. Be yourself when capturing images. Let the inspiration and story come to you and never force it. Always make sure that each image you take like this or like any others, express what you want to get across because it's only believable if you believe it. Don't be afraid to try something new and don't forget to look what is around you even the things up above or down below you. Think about the angles, the lighting, what's in the background, do you need to get close up or further away from your subject. And know what the end product will be before you take it, avoid taking it home and hoping for the best.
