Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in one of the parks in my hometown of Dundee on one of my first few outings with my new camera!

Time

This was taken late afternoon following a trip into town to buy new school shoes for my daughter.. (read stressful!) I escaped to my local park to unwind with my new camera and hoped the rain wasn't going to get too heavy.

Lighting

The lighting was low due to the mist that was gently receding into the background as the rain had already started. I wanted an atmospheric shot, with a creepy feel to it..

Equipment

As a new amateur photographer my camera is a bridge camera until I find the time to learn the ins and outs of a proper DSLR. So on this day the only tools I used were my Fujifilm 9200 and a rain cover for it purchased on eBay!

Inspiration

I have always loved trees, there is something soulful about them, the age, the wisdom and all the changes they see. My favourite tree was from the cover of a Jack Johnson album and I have since seeing that, always looked for beautiful trees. Once I seen the shot on my computer, it appeared to me like that of veins with the many small capillaries branching out giving life.

Editing

I used a processing program to maintain the misty eerie feeling while drawing out the green in the grass. Otherwise I feel it would have looked like a black and white shot.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is minimalist....my Fujifilm 9200, spare batteries, spare memory card and a rain cover. I also have a tripod but have found I prefer to hold my camera. Being a starter I plan on some lessons to learn about using the various settings on my bridge camera, once i require the tripod more i am sure I will bring it along more often.

Feedback

As much as I am a sun worshiper, i have learned this past year that my favourite time to get my camera out is autumn/winter time. The colours, the depth and atmosphere created by clouds work better for me than a clear blue sky. Work with the weather and be prepared to get soaked if you travel without waterproofs (a must in Scotland). This shot was very much made by the mist that was gradually disappearing, be prepared to catch something at a moments notice and have patience to sit it out if something hasn't clicked for you at that stage.
