Behind The Lens

Location

I am currently doing photography at college and this image was part of a David Bailey assignment. The theme of the assignment was to recreate an image from Bailey's body of work. The image was shot in both film and digital in the studio at my college.

Time

I cannot specifically remember what time this was taken, however, as I mentioned before, this image was taken in the studio making the time of day redundant.

Lighting

I used a single studio light with a snoot attachment to create the dark, mysterious look.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon 5500D using a 50mm lens. I used a Bowens studio lamp with the flash on and reflectors of various sizes.

Inspiration

As I mentioned earlier, this was a college assignment to celebrate the work of David Bailey.

Editing

I converted the image into monochrome to be able to correct some lighting issues which also allowed me to make the image more punchy and contrasty.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon 5500D with a 50mm lens in my bag because of its versatility and ease of use. I find that the Nikon small body cameras are easy to hold in one hand, which makes street photography easier.

Feedback

For this I used a photo reference to try to make the lighting the same, however, I would try and weave your own individual style into your image. During the shoot I allowed my model to be himself and just look into the camera rather than posing him and making him feel uncomfortable and I think this shows in this image.
