I took this shot of my daughter in the living room of our new home soon after we moved. The first time we looked at this house, I fell in love with it because of the huge window in the front room. We looked at several others, but I was drawn to this one because of the beautiful light coming in -- I knew it would be perfect for taking photos.Time
This picture was taken mid-morning, probably around 9 or 10am.Lighting
The first time we looked at this house, I fell in love with it because of the huge window in the front room. We looked at several others, but I was drawn to this one because of the beautiful light coming in -- I knew it would be perfect for taking photos, and it is! The door just happened to be opened that day and I drew the sheer curtains closed to block out the harsher light when I started taking pictures.Equipment
I used my Canon 7D and the 35-55mm kit lens that had come with my first camera (Canon Rebel T3i). I hardly ever use that lens, but there wasn't really enough space in my living room to use my 50mm, so I decided to try it that morning.Inspiration
My daughter is a ballerina to the core, and one of her first questions each morning is "Mommy, can you help me put my tutu on?" This morning was no different and soon she was twirling and dancing away. She's so in her element when she's dancing -- happy, free, and not in the lest self-conscious. So I find myself often grabbing the camera and trying to capture these moments because I want to always remember this stage and want her to be able to remember it as well.Editing
I brought up the exposure a tad bit and slightly increased the shadows to give it a little more of a dramatic effect. In my camera bag
I always carry my Canon 7D, my 35mm 1.4 Sigma Art lens, and my battery charger. That's about it!Feedback
With kids, photos are so unpredictable! I always keep my camera readily accessible in our home so when something cute or unique is happening, I can quickly grab it. Even if I miss the initial moment, kids are an endless source of creativity, so if I have the camera nearby, something worth capturing is bound to happen again soon. I try not to direct or impose on them what I want them to do because I want my pictures to capture the beauty of life as it happens. I have to remind my self to be ok with the imperfections of lighting situations and the messiness of my home, because that is part of the story and I want to keep it real!
